Seed Sprouting Mishaps, Part II

I was overzealous. Remember all that stuff I planted? Basil, dill, arugula, spinach, sorrel, mugwort, lavender, rosemary, thyme, a few things I can hardly remember (feverfew?) So many different kinds of seeds. So many different light, heat and water conditions required for their care.

I couldn’t keep track of it all.

Or, rather, I didn’t keep track of it all. Perhaps if I’d been more diligent, kept a notebook or a spreadsheet or something. But I didn’t. And, mostly, everything died. Or never sprouted to begin with. What I am left with are 8 basil plants, one dill plant, one mystery plant, and some sad-looking arugula sprouts. Oh, and some catgrass. And one very weedy-looking flower.

I think you can all intuit the moral of this story.

So, this weekend, I plan to start again. But with just one thing at a time. Once I get that sprouted, growing a little – once I figure out that particular seed’s wants and needs and desires (it’s like starting a million short-term relationships!) – only then will I move on to the next plant.

Thyme first?

Yes, thyme first, I think.

Wish me better luck this time. Have questions? Tips? Comment, or email me at brooklynhomecompanion@gmail.com.

(perhaps I should sign up for Annie Novak’s May gardening series at The Brookyn Kitchen after all … )

Oh no! Have you had sorrel before? I love it – a great refreshing summer drink!

Wait, what? I think we’re talking about two different things, haha. I meant french sorrel, the leafy green that tastes naturally like it’s smothered in lemon. It’s sooooo good. Unless you know how to make some sort of magical sorrel lemonade that I don’t? Which, come to think of it …
